What Can go Wrong With a Napoleon Grill?
Napoleon Grills have made a name for themselves on the market as one of the best grills out there. Like any other grill, though, they're subject to wear and tear over time.
- Regulator Problems
The regulator does what its name implies: it regulates the gas. The following symptoms are signs you may have a problem with your regulator:
- Low heat coming from the burners. If your flame doesn't look right when you turn the gas on high, you may have a regulator problem.
- Burners light up unevenly. You could have regulator problems if one burner looks average or high while the other barely flickers.
- An inadequate hit of gas. Regulator problems reveal themselves when you need increasingly more time to heat your grill.
- Gas leaks can come from a faulty hose. Keep an eye on family pets to prevent them from chewing on the hose and causing leaks.
- Loose connections. Check all of the connections to make sure the hose is tight. You may need to use a wrench to tighten the regulator. If the regulator is stuck, spray lubricant on the threads to help it loosen.
- Burner Problems
If you crank your burners on high but still have low heat, you may have a faulty burner.
Because of their placement in the grill, burners are subjected to wear and tear. Grease will coat them and cause them to corrode quickly. Keep an eye on the condition of your burners to make sure your grill heats efficiently.
- Damaged Tank
Propane tanks have an OPD or overfill Prevention Device on them that prevents the tank from being overfilled. On occasion, you will find a tank with a damaged OPD, and that tank will not work correctly.
- Low Flow of Gas
When the regulator detects a low flow or abnormal flow, it reduces the amount of gas released. So, what can cause a low flow?
Low flow can come easily from improper grilling procedures and less from faulty grill parts. Your grilling practices can cause a low flow if you do the following things:
- Opening the valve too quickly
- Turning on the burners before your urn on the propane tank
- Turning off the propane tank before turning off the knobs
- Leaving the control knobs on after grilling.
- Damaged Barrier
Gas grills all have a barrier between the burner and the cooking grate. Some people refer to the barrier as a radiant.
This barrier absorbs the heat and then releases it to cook your food evenly. Grease and food bits will fall on the barrier regularly, compromising its effectiveness.
How Can You Fix Your Napoleon Grill Problems?
When you fix your Napoleon Grill, you have a couple of options. Sometimes you have to repair the grill and replace parts. Other times you need to just change the way you're grilling.
- Parts Replacement
If you're looking for a burner kit, a spark igniter, a hose, a temperature gauge, a grill grate, or any of the parts you need for your favorite Napoleon grill, you can find the parts you need at Barbecue Parts Depot.
Places like Barbecue Parts Depot will cover you no matter what time of Napoleon grill you have. They have parts for the following Napoleon Grills:
- Fixing Your Grill
If your barrier is causing uneven cooking, replace it. Purchase new lava rocks to keep the heat evenly balanced or just clean the metal plate regularly.
If your burner has corroded and isn't working properly, replace it. Look for a higher quality burner in the same shape and size to ensure your burner lasts a long time.
If any of your parts begin to malfunction you can easily replace them with just a couple of clicks online.
- Operator Error
Sometimes you need to just change the way you operate your grill. For example, do not turn your burners on before you turn on your propane. And do not turn off the propane before you turn off your burners.
Always turn your propane on first and then your burners. When you're done cooking, turn off your burners, and then turn off your propane.
If you already have a low flame or low heat issue, go through the following procedure:
- Turn everything off--propane and burners. Turn off your gas flow at the tank.
- Completely disconnect the regulator from the tank. This may require a wrench and some lubricant if the regulator is stuck.
- Walk away. Let everything sit for about five minutes.
- Reconnect your regulator. Slowly open the valve completely.
- Wait 30 seconds, and then light your grill.
You need to re-set your grill at this point. Then learn from your operator mistakes so you can extend the life of your grill.
Why Not Just Replace the Grill?
At this point, if you're having to order parts and install them, you may wonder, do I grill repair or replace?
Gas grills come in various sizes and costs. A new gas grill will cost you between $250 and $12,500. Once you find your favorite grill, you do not want to replace it quickly.
No repair will cost you as much as a new high-end grill. Plus, when you repair your grill, you walk away with the satisfaction that you've fixed your problems instead of just tossing the grill to the side.
You do not have to think about how to get rid of a broken grill but rather can stand proud knowing you fixed it. You'll save yourself money as well.
Repair and Relax
Once you've diagnosed and then fixed your grill problems, you can once again sit back, crack a cold one, and enjoy your Napoleon Grill.
